Being single can feel empowering and independence is hugely attractive. It’s one of the things I look for in a man. I like a guy to be happy in his own skin with a life of his own. Good relationships are when you’re happy together and apart – though if you do spend time apart, the Skype thing can be frustrating. It’s not a substitute for a proper hug.

I’m grateful to my red hair now. And I doubt I’d have been offered half the roles I’ve played without it. It helps you stand out in the crowd in ways that used to make me cry when I was the only ‘ginger’ in a 40-mile radius at school. Now I’ve reached an age where I know it’s OK to be different. Vive la différence, in fact.

"We are a big, close family. I am the third of five siblings. I have an elder brother in the gas and oil industry, an elder sister who’s a teacher, a younger brother who’s a linguist and a younger sister who’s a hedge-fund manager. I live with her in London. Family, for me, is the most important thing because it is constant and real. Much as I love my job, it picks you up and it puts you down." — Rose Leslie for YOU Magazine
